Language purposes and functions

In the introductory level we will cover the following functions:

1. Learn the names of the letters in the Arabic alphabet
2. Learn the vowels; Fat’hah, Dhammah and Kasrah
3. Listen to the correct pronunciation of the Arabic alphabet with different vowels
4. Practise reading the Arabic Alphabet; with Fathah, with Dhammah, with Kasrah and with Sukoon
5. Practise reading; half words, full words, two words and short sentences
6. Improve pronunciation of the Arabic alphabet
7. Learn and practice the very basic rules of reading.
8. Practise reading from additional material such as the Qur’an and selected Arabic text books
9. Developing the understanding of Arabic according to different contexts
10. Learn essential Arabic grammatical terms such as (nouns, verbs and particles/prepositions) and Tajweed rules, such as (The Harakaat, al-Tanween, al-Tashdid, Silent Letters and the Stopping).
11. Learn how to write and print the Arabic Alphabet clearly in different forms.
12. Learn how to write and print words clearly.
13. Translate simple Arabic word to English.

Grammar and Linguistic Structures

Although the emphasis is placed on reading and writing skills however, by the end of the introductory level, Students will recognise and be able to make an attempt at producing the following grammar linguistic structures:

1. Nouns  (الأسْمَاء)
   - Masculine (مُذَكَّر) and Feminine (مُؤنَّث)
   - Basic knowledge of case ending (الرَّفع nominative / النَّصب accusative / الْجرّ genitive) and Tanween
2. Prepositions (حُرُوفُ الْجَرِ)
3. Verbs (الأَفْعَال)

Vocabulary Area

Vocabulary used in the introductory level are mainly Qur’anic words, however, in the writing section student will develop vocabulary from a wider range of contexts.

Students should learn and memorise more than a hundred words from the Holy Qur’an through studying the course book at this level.

At introductory level there are no pre-requisites.

Materials

The text book that will be used is ‘Towards Reading Arabic and Qur’an’ developed by SAIS. This text book will be given to each of the students on his/her first Arabic lesson. Other texts will also be used throughout the course to aid learning, however it will not be necessary to buy these books or for SAIS to provide different textbooks as photo copies and handouts will be given out when different material is used by the teachers. Also electronic presentations and short videos will also be used to help the students along the course.

Assessment and Homework

Homework will be given every lesson in order to allow student to connect with the subject, homework carries 48 % of the total mark to pass to the next level. The homework will be biased on particular exercises from the text book as well as the surahs from Juz’ Amm (chapter 30 from the Qur’an). Also there will be a mid term assessment to ascertain progress during the course. As well as the end of the course exam students will be taking which carries 52 % of the total mark based on the reading and writing skills developed during the course. SAIS also offers an optional official exam from OCR. As this is an external exam there will be an additional charge for those who would like to enter themselves for these exams. SAIS provides all these references for sale for any student who wishes to purchase them. These references will be available in the classrooms to be used by teachers and students.

Vocabulary list

In this list the vocabularies are divided into two parts Qur’anic vocabulary and none Qur’anic vocabulary, there will be about 150 words, and students should learn these words, their meaning and learn how to write them. Please note this list will only be made available to those who register for the course.
