Language purposes and functions

In level Two A (Intermediate stage), the Students will be able to realise the following functions by:

a) Building the specifications at Level Two A (Pre-Intermediate stage) by adding length and complexity to the language used

b) Using a greater range of areas:

1. Taking part in social situations, e.g. greeting / responding to greetings, expressing thanks and apologising

Grammar and Linguistic Structures

In this level students will recognise and be able to make an attempt at producing the following grammar and linguistic structures, within the appropriate functional area as well as all grammar and linguistic listed at Level Two A (Pre-Intermediate stage). Verbs الأَفْعَال

1. Verbal sentences (الجملة الفِعْلِية)
2. Imperfect tense (الفِعل الْمُضَارِع)
   - The Indicative Mood (الْمُضَارِعُ الْمَرْفُوع)
   - The Subjunctive Mood (الْمُضَارِعُ الْمَنْصُوب)

Vocabulary Area

The vocabulary areas used in this level consists of common items that occur in the everyday vocabulary of native speakers. Some items may be glossed to aid students. Please consult the vocabulary detailed list for more information.

This course is aimed at students who have successfully completed Level One with SAIS or a suitable equivalent.

Materials

The text book used is ‘The Arabic Course of Madinah Islamic University for English Students, vol. 2 (from lesson 14 – end of the book)’ by Professor V. Abd Al-Raheem. This text book will be given to each of the students on his/her first Arabic lesson. Other texts will also be used throughout the course to aid learning however it will not be necessary to buy these books or for SAIS to provide different textbooks as photo copies and handouts will be given out when different material is used by the teachers.

Assessment and Homework

Homework will be given every lesson in order to help the students to be connected with subject. Homework carries 48 % of the total mark to pass to the next level. The homework will be biased on particular exercise from the text book, as well as from surah Yousuf (Surah no 12). Also there will be assessment in the middle of the course and by the end of the course students will be taking an exam which carries 52 % biased on the reading and writing skills. SAIS also offers an official exam from OCR, however students needs to pay fees for this exam. Please consult the office manager for more details about the equivalent level and the fees.

Students in this Level will learn and memorise about 200 vocabularies. These vocabularies are used in different areas and takes account of the 27 different areas which was mention earlier. However, only student who are registered in the course will get this list.

Pre-requisite

This course is aimed at students who have successfully completed level Two A with SAIS or a suitable equivalent.

Materials

The text book that will be used is ‘The Arabic Course of Madinah Islamic University for English Students, vol. 3 (chapter 1 – 15)’ by Professor V. Abd Al-Raheem. This text book will be given to each of the students on his/her first Arabic lesson. Other texts will also be used throughout the course to aid learning however it will not be necessary to buy these books or for SAIS to provide different textbooks as photo copies and handouts will be given out when different material is used by the teachers. Also electronic and short videos will also be used to help the students during the course.

Assessment and Homework

Homework will be given every lesson in order to help the student to connect with the subject, homework carries 48 % of the total end of level mark. The homework will be biased on particular exercises from the text book, as well as from surah Al-‘Araaf (Surah no 7). There will also be a mid-term assessment as well as the end of the course exam which carries 52 % of the total mark. This exam will be based on the reading and writing skills covered at this level.

SAIS also offers an optional official exam from OCR. As this is an external exam there will be an additional charge for those who would like to enter themselves for these exams. Please consult the office manager for more details about the levels available and fees.
