Arabic Grammar Level 3b

(Level Three B (Advance) in Arabic Grammar)
Learn Arabic to understand the Holy Qur’an and the Noble Hadith

 

Aims

The course is aimed at complete Advance and is designed over 1 semester to improve and enable students to communicate in Arabic Fus-hah within a range of everyday situations using the four skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. Arabic Fus-hah is the recognised means of formal spoken and written communication. Arabic Fus-hah is used in the Qur’an, traditional Islamic rescores and also used throughout the Arabic speaking world on official occasions, in education and the media.

The course is taught in Arabic. There is a balance between communicative activities, structure practice, grammar and vocabulary. Class size is limited to 20 students to maximise interactive learning.

Content

Language purposes and functions

In level Three B (Advance stage), the realisation of these functions:

a) Builds in the specifications at Level Three (Pre-Advance stage) by giving more details to the language used

b) Uses the following range of areas:

Vocabulary Area

The vocabulary areas used in this level consists of common items occur in the everyday vocabulary of native speakers using the target language today in a range of predictable everyday areas. Some items may be glossed to aid students. Please consult the vocabulary detailed list for more information.

Pre-requisite

This course is aimed at students who have successfully completed level Three A with SAIS or a suitable equivalent.

Materials

The text book that will be used is ‘The Arabic Course of Madinah Islamic University for English Students, vol. 3 (chapter 16 – end of the book)’ by Professor V. Abd Al-Raheem. This text book will be given to each of the students on his/her first Arabic lesson. Other texts will also be used throughout the course to aid learning however it will not be necessary to buy these books or for SAIS to provide different textbooks as photo copies and handouts will be given out when different material is used by the teachers. Also electronic and short videos will also be used to help the students during the course.

Assessment and Homework

Homework will be given every lesson in order to help the student to connect with the subject, homework carries 48 % of the total end of level mark. The homework will be biased on particular exercises from the text book, as well as from surah Al-‘Araaf (Surah no 7). There will also be a mid-term assessment as well as the end of the course exam which carries 52 % of the total mark. This exam will be based on the reading and writing skills covered at this level.

SAIS also offers an optional official exam from OCR. As this is an external exam there will be an additional charge for those who would like to enter themselves for these exams. Please consult the office manager for more details about the levels available and fees.

Students in this Level will learn and memorise about 200 vocabularies. These vocabularies are used in different areas and takes account of the nine different areas mentioned earlier. However, only student who are registered for the course will get this list.

Arabic Grammar Intro

(Introductory Level in Arabic Grammar & Tajweed)
Learn Arabic to understand the Holy Qur’an and the Noble Hadith

 

Aims

The course is aimed at complete beginners and is taught over 1 term. Students will have the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the Arabic alphabet and basic structures of classical Arabic. This will help the students gain a firm grounding for the comprehension of the language of the Qur’an, as well as enable them to read the Holy Qur’an correctly. The course will also introduce students to the Arabic writing system and enable them to read and write basic words and sentences. Emphasis is placed on reading and writing skills to make the Qur’anic text accessible to students.

The approach adopted in teaching is grammar based. Class size is limited to 20 to make learning as interactive as possible.

Prior knowledge of the Arabic Language is not essential

Content

Language purposes and functions

In the introductory level we will cover the following functions:

  1. Learn the names of the letters in the Arabic alphabet
  2. Learn the vowels; Fat’hah, Dhammah and Kasrah
  3. Listen to the correct pronunciation of the Arabic alphabet with different vowels
  4. Practise reading the Arabic Alphabet; with Fathah, with Dhammah, with Kasrah and with Sukoon
  5. Practise reading; half words, full words, two words and short sentences
  6. Improve pronunciation of the Arabic alphabet
  7. Learn and practice the very basic rules of reading.
  8. Practise reading from additional material such as the Qur’an and selected Arabic text books
  9. Developing the understanding of Arabic according to different contexts
  10. Learn essential Arabic grammatical terms such as (nouns, verbs and particles/prepositions) and Tajweed rules, such as (The Harakaat, al-Tanween, al-Tashdid, Silent Letters and the Stopping).
  11. Learn how to write and print the Arabic Alphabet clearly in different forms.
  12. Learn how to write and print words clearly.
  13. Translate simple Arabic word to English.

Grammar and Linguistic Structures

Although the emphasis is placed on reading and writing skills however, by the end of the introductory level, Students will recognise and be able to make an attempt at producing the following grammar linguistic structures:

  1. Nouns  (الأسْمَاء)
    - Masculine (مُذَكَّر) and Feminine (مُؤنَّث)
    - Basic knowledge of case ending (الرَّفع nominative / النَّصب accusative / الْجرّ genitive) and Tanween
  2. Prepositions (حُرُوفُ الْجَرِ)
  3. Verbs (الأَفْعَال)

Vocabulary Area

Vocabulary used in the introductory level are mainly Qur’anic words, however, in the writing section student will develop vocabulary from a wider range of contexts.

Students should learn and memorise more than a hundred words from the Holy Qur’an through studying the course book at this level.

Other texts will also be used throughout the course to aid learning, however it will not be necessary to buy these books or for SAIS to provide different textbooks as photo copies and handouts will be given out when different material is used by the teachers. Also electronic presentations and short videos will also be used to help the students along the course.

Assessment and Homework

Homework will be given every lesson in order to allow student to connect with the subject, homework carries 48 % of the total mark to pass to the next level. The homework will be biased on particular exercises from the text book as well as the surahs from Juz’ Amm (chapter 30 from the Qur’an). Also there will be a mid term assessment to ascertain progress during the course. As well as the end of the course exam students will be taking which carries 52 % of the total mark based on the reading and writing skills developed during the course. SAIS also offers an optional official exam from OCR. As this is an external exam there will be an additional charge for those who would like to enter themselves for these exams.
